FAQs

  • Wild Barbell is a USAW Certified Barbell Club founded in 2023 by Nolan Schillerstrom that offers personalized coaching to athletes at Crossfit Johns Island in Charleston, South Carolina and remotely via video review!

  • Anyone who wants to improve their Olympic barbell movements: the snatch, clean, and jerk. Coach Nolan most often offers weightlifting programming for crossfitters wanting to improve their lifts.

  • Nolan will create a personalized program for you based on your specific goals and needs. This programming and the associated coaching from Coach Nolan will improve your efficiency and power with the barbell. You'll likely also see many co-benefits in other areas of fitness. Each program will include two lifting sessions a week and each session will take you about 40-70min to complete. You are welcome to complete your lifting sessions at Crossfit Johns Island during designated open gym / "training hall" times or on your own at whatever time best fits your schedule. If you complete your lifts during training hall times, Nolan will coach you through your lifts and give you real time feedback. If you opt to complete your workouts on your own that is completely fine! You can take videos of your lifts for Nolan to review. Regardless, taking videos of your lifts is encouraged!

  • Currently, training hall times are Monday & Wednesday, from 6:30-7:30pm, and Friday from 5:30-6:30pm. Depending on schedules and interest, these times may be adjusted. Training hall times are treated essentially like an open gym time for those participating in training hall. Currently, training hall times happen concurrently with the last CFJI class time of the day.

This weekly schedule may change on certain holidays throughout the year!

  • Yes, absolutely! Your personalized program will take your total workout volume into account every week and every month. Coach Nolan will work with you to figure out the right training volume. We recommend, at minimum, taking a few rest days every week with one being a complete rest day (running 3 miles as "active rest" doesn't count as a rest day).

  • You can sign up for as short or as long as you would like. There is no commitment beyond the month-to-month membership. However, in order to begin seeing real results you should expect to stay with the program for minimum 2, more like 3+ months to give yourself enough practice with the movements.

  • Nolan Schillerstrom is a USAW L1 certified coach and also has his Crossfit L1. He receives top-notch coaching from Lowcountry Barbell Club in Goose Creek and has been since fall of 2022. He is a member and coach at Crossfit Johns Island.

  • We are at capacity right now but will be accepting additional members in the future. We took on five people for the first 2-3 months of the program and now have 11 total athletes in the program. Any other interested people will be placed on a waitlist with an expected new athlete intake to occur either fall 2023 or early 2024.

  • As a personal anecdote from Coach Nolan, “It wasn’t until I spent more dedicated time under the watchful eye of a USAW coach that I started seeing my snatch and clean & jerk become more consistent and the PRs started rolling in on a regular basis.” Not only will your numbers very likely improve, but your confidence with the barbell will skyrocket as you spend more structured time with it.
